The Battle for Gary Coleman’s Estate is On

On Behalf of | Jun 30, 2010 | Probate |

The drama surrounding Gary Coleman’s death is beginning to look like a mere taste of the main event, which is building up around the late actor’s estate and allegations of coercion in the drafting of a new will. The main point of contention is Coleman’s estate plan, which ex-wife Shannon Price and ex-girlfriend Anna Gray have both claimed the benefits of.

Both women are also engaged in a fight over who is to possess Coleman’s cremated remains.

The problem is this: In 2005, Gary Coleman created a will in which he left his estate to ex-girlfriend and close friend Anna Gray. This was before he met and married Shannon Price. The couple divorced in 2007 and Coleman later filed a restraining order against her, though they stayed in close contact.

After Coleman’s death, Price came forward with an amended will. Supposedly written in 2007, it transferred the actor’s estate to Price in the event of his death. Both Gray and Coleman’s longtime attorney have accused Price of intimidating Coleman into updating his will.

Coleman’s attorney has pointed out that the language used in the updated will is extremely specific and that there is no way the actor would have known some of the words included, much less how to use them. It also seems strange that Coleman would not have brought the will forward himself, assuming it was written nearly three years before his death.

Though Coleman was far from wealthy when he died, his estate could potentially be worth millions of dollars is something such as a biography or movie were produced based on his life.
